Location

Myanmar (Burma) is situated on the western part of Indochina peninsula, which is in the South-East region of Asia, between Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Its exact location is between North Latitude 9. 30/ and 28. 30/, and between East Longitude 92. 10/ and 101. 11/. It is the second largest country in South East Asia after Indonesia .Myanmar is not a landlocked country. The southern part is open to the sea; the other sides are bordered by China, Laos, Thailand, Bandladesh and India.

Size

From East to West it stretches about 600mls ( 936kms) and North to South about 1300mls (2051kms) . Its total area is about 261228 sqmls ( 676577 sqkms).

Topography

The topograpy of the country is mixed with mountain ranges of different heights and low lying areas. But one can roughly say that the central Myanmar is mostly lowland. There are three main rivers, viz., the Ayeyawwady, the Chindwin and the Thanlwin , all flowing from North to South of the country. The highest mountain in Myanmar, Khakaborazi, towering about 5881 meters ( over 2000ft), lies in the Northern part of the country in the Kachin State.The country is administratively divided into 7 states and 7 divisions.

Weather

There are three seasons in Myanmar - Summer season, Rainy season and Winter season.

Religion

Buddhism is the main religion in Myanmar , but there are also other religion such as Christianity , Islam , Hinduism and also some who worship deities ( Nats ).

Population

According to the census taken in 2001 the population of Myanmar is about 51 million. At present it is estimated that the figure has risen to about 60 million.

Races

The main races of the country are Bamar,Kayin,Chin,Kayar,Kayin,Rakhine, Shan and Mon; but there are also about 135 tribus ethnic groups.

Currency

Myanmar currency is Kyat , one Kyat being equal to 100 pyas.For the convenience of the visiters ,Foregin Exchange Certificates (FECs) are issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar to use during their stay. This FECs are acceptable like US dollars by any person in the Union of Myanmar.It is printed on the note as 1FEC = 1USD.
